What is federal income tax withheld?
Federal income tax withheld is a part of your income that is sent directly to the IRS rather than given to you. This amount is used to help pay your total tax bill each year. Withholdings from investment or miscellaneous income are extra tax you withheld in addition to any wage or retirement withholdings. All of your withholding amounts will factor into your total refund or amount owed.
If you received a 1099 for investment or miscellaneous income, enter the amount from Column or Box 4.
