What is an Employer Identification Number (EIN)?
An Employer Identification Number (EIN) is a nine digit number used to identify a business. Businesses are assigned EINs from the IRS.
You can find your employer's EIN in Box B of your W-2. It will usually be printed with a dash after the first two digits, as in this example: 77-7777777. If your W-2 doesn't have an EIN in Box B, contact your employer.
The EIN is different from your Social Security number.
If you're using your last paystub of the year to enter your W-2 information instead of using your actual W-2, you'll need to wait to file until you have received your actual W-2 from your employer.
