How long will it take my direct debit payment to go through?

Once the IRS has processed your return, they will initiate the direct debit process. It can take your bank up to five days to complete the direct debit and update your account information. If the IRS/state or your bank can't process the direct debit payment, you'll need to pay the IRS/state using a different payment option by April 15, 2026 or your respective state's payment deadline in order to avoid penalties.
