What do I choose for my California marital status during 2025?

To qualify for the Head of Household filing status, you must be either unmarried or considered unmarried on the last day of the year.

See the explanations below for the different options:
  • Single - You weren't legally married or in a Registered Domestic Partnership (RDP) during any of 2025.
  • Divorced / Legally Separated - You received final decree of divorce, legal separation, dissolution, or termination of marriage or RDP by December 31, 2025.
  • Married / Registered Domestic Partnership (RDP) - You were legally married or in an RDP during 2025. Choose this option if you were legally married or in an RDP as of December 31, 2025, even if you didn't live with your spouse. We'll then gather information about time your spouse/partner lived with you to determine if you can be considered unmarried.
  • Surviving Spouse / Registered Domestic Partnership (RDP) - Your spouse or partner died before January 1, 2025 and you didn't remarry during 2025.
  • Annulled Marriage / Registered Domestic Partnership (RDP) - Your marriage or RDP was annulled during 2025.
