How do I change my tax return if I get a new tax form after I already filed?

If you receive a new W-2, Form 1099-INT, Form 1099-DIV, Form 1099-R, etc., after you have mailed or e-filed your tax return, you'll need to amend your return by filing Form 1040-X.

We recommend that you don't amend your tax return until after you have received your refund or paid the taxes you owe from your original return you filed. The IRS will often automatically make a correction to your tax return for missing or incorrect W-2 or 1099 forms. You don't need to amend your federal tax return if the IRS corrects the error when they process your original tax return. You'll receive an IRS notice explaining the adjustment or asking for additional forms for documentation.

If you do need to amend your tax return, sign in to your account and click the Amend Tax Return link from the Account menu.

After starting your amendment, enter the new W-2 or 1099. If it's a corrected W-2 or 1099, adjust the existing W-2 or 1099 to have the correct amounts. Once you've finished making the needed changes, you can use the Final Steps menu to complete your amended tax return.
