How do I figure the education credit recapture?

The education credit recapture is the amount by which your 2024 tax liability would have been increased if you had used the corrected education expenses to figure the education credit in 2024. You'll need your 2024 Form 8863 and Form 1040.

You can refigure the education credit by doing the following:
  1. Refigure the amount of your qualified education expenses for 2024 by reducing the expenses that you originally entered in 2024 by the amount of the tuition refund or tax-free educational assistance that you received after filing your 2024 tax return.
  2. Enter the refigured education expenses on your 2024 Form 8863, Line 27 or Line 31 depending on if you took the American Opportunity Credit or Lifetime Learning Credit.
  3. Use the refigured education expenses to recalculate your 2024 education credit on Form 8863.
  4. Enter the refigured 2024 education credit on your 2024 Form 1040 as your 2024 Form 8863 indicates.
  5. Calculate your total tax on your 2024 Form 1040, Line 16
  6. Subtract the tax that was originally on your 2024 Form 1040 from your newly refigured tax. This is the amount to recapture. If there's no difference between the original and newly recalculated tax liability, then you don't need to recapture anything.
Example:
You paid $9,300 in tuition and fees in December 2024, and your child began college in January 2025. You filed your 2024 tax return on February 14, 2025, and claimed a Lifetime Learning Credit of $1,860. You claimed no other tax credits. After you filed your return, your child withdrew from two courses and you received a refund of $2,900. You must refigure your 2024 Lifetime Learning Credit using $6,400 of qualified education expenses instead of $9,300. The refigured credit is $1,280 and your tax liability increased by $580. You would enter $580 as the education credit recapture.
