What is my tax household?

Your tax household includes you, your spouse (if filing a joint return), and everyone that you claim as a dependent on your tax return. It also generally includes each individual you can, but don't, claim as a dependent on your tax return. So your tax household would include yourself, your spouse (if married), and any dependents such as children or relatives that you support.

Your tax household doesn't include someone you can, but don't, claim as a dependent if the dependent is properly claimed on another person's return or can be claimed by another person with higher priority under the tie-breaker rules.

For example, if you live alone and you don't have any dependents, then your tax household is just you.

On the other hand, if you're married and have two children that you're claiming as dependents then your tax household includes you, your spouse, and your two children.
