What do I do if I don't know my Identity Protection PIN (IP PIN)?

If you lost, misplaced, or simply don't know your current year's Identity Protection PIN (IP PIN), you have two options:

  1. Recommended: You can find your IP PIN by signing in on the on the IRS website . You'll be asked a series of questions to verify your identity, and then you'll be shown your IP PIN. You'll be able to e-file your return.

  2. You can call the Identity Protection Specialized Unit (IPSU) toll-free at 1-800-908-4490 to receive a new replacement IP PIN. You'll be asked a series of questions to verify your identity, and then you'll receive a new IP PIN. Note: You can e-file your return, but it will be delayed since the IRS will manually verify your tax return.
If you're unable to retrieve your IP PIN, you can still print and mail a paper tax return without your IP PIN. The IRS will review your return to confirm it's yours, but this may delay any refund you're due.
