Am I a nonresident of Hawaii?

You're a Hawaii nonresident if you were in Hawaii for a temporary purpose and your permanent home is elsewhere. You'd also choose Nonresident if you were never present in Hawaii but need to report taxable income from Hawaii sources.

Keep in mind that if you did business in Hawaii during 2025, you must file a return whether or not you made any taxable income from that business. For example, every person receiving rents from property owned in Hawaii is "doing business" and must file a return whether or not they made a profit.

Note that students and military members have different requirements.
