The moving expenses deduction is just for active duty members of the Armed Forces who are relocating because of a
permanent change in station.
Qualified work-related moving expenses are limited to transportation costs for your family and belongings, packing costs, certain lodging costs, and certain storage costs. You can choose to deduct your actual automobile expenses (like gas and oil) or use the standard mileage deduction of $0.21 a mile. For lodging, you can deduct the expenses for the night before you move, the nights during the move, and the night after you arrive in your new city. You can also deduct the first 30 days of storage expenses. However, expenses like meals, temporary living costs, and house-hunting trips aren't deductible.
If you moved from the United States or its territories to a foreign country, or from one foreign country to another, special rules apply. Along with the usual expenses, you can deduct reasonable costs for:
-
Moving your belongings to and from storage
-
Storing the items while your new job location is your main job location
