How do I know how much income belongs to a state if I'm a nonresident of the state?

Nonresident income is usually considered to be any income you made in a state where you did not live.

We've already calculated the total amount of your income in each category, so you just need to tell us how much of your total income is applicable to the state.

Here are a few examples. Note that the income will likely need to be reported on the resident return as well. However, full-year residents can often claim a credit for taxes paid to another state.

For state-specific tax treatment, see any additional help on this page or reference the state tax instructions.
