How do I know if my extension is accepted and considered timely?
If you mail your extension, then the extension is considered as filed on the postmark date. If you e-file it, then the extension is marked as filed on that day it is accepted. If the e-filed extension gets rejected, then the IRS gives you five days to either print the extension and mail it in or to re-efile it. You will receive a rejection or acceptance message via email.
You can also check the status of your e-filed extension by signing in to your account and going to the Account menu in the top-right corner of your screen.
