Should I mail or e-file my extension?
For most customers, we recommend that you e-file your extension to the IRS.
If you e-file your extension, you need to be sure to sign into your account later and verify that the e-filed extension was accepted by the IRS. If your e-filed extension is rejected by the IRS and you don't remember to sign back in to correct the error and submit your extension again before the deadline, then your extension won't be filed.
Late filing penalties may apply if you owe taxes and you don't file your return or extension by April 15, 2026.
Late payment penalties may apply if you don't pay the taxes you owe by April 15, 2026, regardless of whether you file an extension or not.
