What is a Vermont Extension?

An extension allows additional time (6 months) to file your 2025 tax return. If you expect to get a refund and you filed a federal extension, you aren't required to file a Vermont extension. If you expect to owe taxes on your Vermont return, you can complete your Vermont extension here: Menu Path: Account > File an Extension

An extension only allows more time to file the income tax return. It does not extend the due date for the tax payment. Interest and penalty accrue on tax due from the day the tax is due to the receipt of payment.

The extension and tax payment is due by April 15, 2025. Extended returns must be filed by Oct. 15, 2025.

Note: There is no extension of time to file a Vermont Homestead Declaration or Property Tax Credit (Form HS-122). You may file Form HS-122 up to October 15, 2026, but you will be charged a penalty for filing late.
