To withdraw excess HSA contributions and avoid the 6% excise penalty, please use the following steps:
-
You'll need to contact your HSA or HSA representative. HSA plans should have a phone number, and/or a website with contact information.
-
If you're calling your HSA representative, explain that you need to make a withdrawal to correct an excess contribution. Some plans have a form on their website that you can fill in and mail directly to the HSA.
-
You'll need to withdraw the excess contributions as well as any earnings on the contributions themselves. For example, if you contributed $100 over the limit, and had 5% earnings, you'd need to withdraw $105.
-
If the HSA sends you a check, copy the check and keep it for your tax records along with your other HSA documentation.
-
The 1099-SA that the HSA sends should reflect this withdrawal.
Note: Excess HSA contributions from years prior to 2025 can't be withdrawn at this point.
