If you buy a computer to use for your job, the computer may be deductible as an unreimbursed job expense if the computer was purchased as a condition of your employment, for the convenience of your employer, and is necessary for you to perform your duties as an employee. The IRS strictly enforces these conditions and will disallow the deduction unless you can prove the computer is necessary to do your job. Enter the job-related portion of the computer purchase price on the Employee Business Expenses screen. This deduction is only available to certain types of employees.

If you have a Form 1099-NEC for consulting or contractor income or if you need to file a Schedule C for any other type of business income, you can deduct the portion of your computer that you use for your business income. Business income and expenses are entered on the Business Income (Schedule C) screens.
