You can designate your preparer, a friend, a family member, or any other person you choose to discuss your tax return with the IRS and state tax department. For example, the IRS or state tax department can call the designated person to answer any questions that they may have with the processing of your tax return.
You're also giving the designee permission to:
- Give the IRS or state tax department any information that is missing from your return.
- Call the IRS or state tax department for information about the processing of your return and the status of your refund or payment.
- Receive copies of notices or transcripts related to your return.
- Respond to certain IRS or state tax department notices about math errors, offsets, and return preparation.
The designee's authorization will automatically end no later than the due date (without extensions) for filing your 2026 tax return.
