If you are married by the last day of 2025, you generally only have the choice of filing with the Married Filing Jointly or Married Filing Separately filing status. In most cases, Married Filing Jointly will give you the best result on your tax return between your two filing status options. However, there are many valid reasons to use the Married Filing Separately filing status. Choose the filing status option that makes the most sense for your given circumstances.

If you are single without children or dependents, you will need to file using the Single filing status. However, if you are single with children or dependents, or legally married and living with your children but living physically separately from your spouse, you may be eligible to file using the Head of Household filing status (which often provides a better refund than the Single or Married Filing Separately filing statuses).
