If you provide more than half the support for your mom or dad and you meet the other conditions listed in the
Children and Dependents section, such as your mom or dad making less than $5,200 in income, then you can claim your mom or dad as a dependent on your tax return.
If you can claim your mom or dad as a dependent, are unmarried, and pay more than half the cost of keeping up your mom's or dad's home (or pay more than half the cost of their rest-home care), you are usually eligible to file using the
Head of Household filing status instead of
Single, even if your mom or dad does not live with you.
