Your state of residency depends on a lot of different factors, but it's basically your permanent home. Some of the factors in determining your state of residency are:
- Where you own or rent your main home
- Where you're registered to vote
- Where you have your driver's license
- Your financial and family connections
- If you intend to stay in the state
If you're a college student attending an out-of-state college, your state of residency is usually your home state and not the college state unless you have a permanent address in the college state.
If you're serving in the military, your state of residency is usually your home state when you joined the military.
