What is the LT 26 notice telling me?
This is a reminder that the IRS doesn't have a record of receiving federal income tax returns for the years shown in the notice and you haven't responded to previous requests to file the returns.
What do I have to do?
File the returns or contact them to discuss the matter. If you are a wage earner, they can usually provide you with your income and withholding information if you don't have the necessary records to complete your returns.
How much time do I have?
Contact them as soon as possible, but no later than 10 days after the date on the notice.
What happens if I don't file?
They may file the return for you. If this occurs, the tax liability could be higher than a return completed and filed by you because they must use the
Single filing status. Usually, voluntarily filed returns reflect lower tax and/or higher refund amounts than a return prepared and filed on your behalf by them.
Who should I contact if I have questions?
Contact them at the phone number shown in the notice.
What if I don't agree or have already taken corrective action?
If you don't agree, call them immediately at the number printed on the notice. If you called them about this matter before, but they didn't correct the problem, you may want to contact the
Taxpayer Advocate Service.
If you have already filed the requested return(s), you should still call them at the number printed on the notice to make sure your account reflects this. They may ask you to resubmit the return with an original signature.
