The Massachusetts Department of Revenue (DOR) uses the 2-D barcode to quickly and accurately scan in all the information printed on your tax return.

If you make handwritten changes to your return, the 2-D barcode won't reflect those changes. You must go back into the software and make any necessary changes; then print out your return again. Handwritten changes on computer-generated returns aren't acceptable and will be given lowest priority by the DOR. Failure to print a new return after making changes will severely impact DOR processing and introduce errors.

What settings should I use to print my return?

Adobe Acrobat Reader is needed to view or print your tax return. If you are unable to view or print your return, update or reinstall Adobe Acrobat Reader. We've found that many printing problems can be solved by updating or reinstalling Acrobat Reader.

When saving a form in PDF format, the Adobe reader defaults to fit or shrink to printable area. When this happens, the 2-D barcode becomes unreadable.

Before printing your return from software which manages .pdf files such as Adobe, make sure the "Print Scaling" attribute is set to "None" before clicking "Print". This will allow the Massachusetts DOR to correctly scan in your printed return without additional delays.

Additionally, be sure to print on white 20-lb.
