Once you have a completed return in your account and have started an amendment, you can then make changes to most information needed from your original return. All your original information will be on the screens. Just continue through all the screens or use the menu to go to the screens you need to change.
For example, if you received another
W-2 after your original e-filed return was accepted, you can use the menu to go to the
W-2 section and enter the new
W-2.
If you need to amend your state tax return, you would use the menu to go to any state screens you need to make changes to and review the state tax return for any federal changes that affected the state tax return.
When you're done making changes, use the menu to go to the
Final Steps section and go through all the
Final Steps screens. In some cases, amended returns can be e-filed; otherwise, you'll need to print and mail your amended return. In either case, we'll give you step-by-step instructions.
We recommend that you do not amend your tax return until after you have received your refund or paid the taxes you owe from your original return you filed. The IRS will often automatically make a correction to your tax return for missing or incorrect
W-2 or
1099 forms. You do not need to amend your federal tax return if the IRS corrects the error on your tax return when they process your original tax return. You will receive an IRS notice explaining the adjustment or asking for additional forms for documentation.
