Do I need to file Form 8453?

Form 8453 is used when you need to mail something to the IRS after the rest of your tax return has been electronically accepted. The IRS uses it to match your supporting documents to your e-filed tax return.

For instance, if you are a noncustodial parent who claims dependents who do not live with you due to divorce or separation, you need to file Form 8453 when sending in Form 8332. You may also need to file it if you entered a summary of capital gains investments sold, claimed a donated vehicle as an itemized deduction, or are claiming certain biodiesel credits.

If it is necessary, we'll provide a link to print this form after your tax return has been accepted by the IRS. More instructions will be provided on the View Return Status and Print Your Copy screen if this applies to your situation.
