Most states will simply use the same deduction type (standard or itemized) that you used on your federal return. However,
some states let you choose to itemize deductions even if you took the
Standard Deduction on your federal return.
To use itemized deductions on your state return, enter your itemized deductions on the federal screens for
Itemized Deductions, even if you are not itemizing your deductions for the federal return. State itemized deductions use the same itemized deductions as the federal, so even if your itemized deductions may not be enough to take on the federal tax return, they might be enough to take on your state tax return. If there are any state specific itemized deductions, those will be gathered on a separate screen within the state section of the software. But generally, almost all state itemized deductions are the same as what you enter in the federal itemized deduction section of the software.
