Where do I enter real estate property taxes?
Menu Path: Deductions/Credits > Itemized Deductions > Homeowner Expenses (1098)
Enter your real estate property taxes on the Homeowner Expenses screen. Include all personal real estate taxes paid for your home, vacation home, land, or other types of property. Include all personal real estate taxes paid through your mortgage lender (usually shown on Form 1098), as well as personal real estate taxes paid directly to your state or local government.
If you're deducting home office expenses for a business (Schedule C), enter ALL of your real estate tax here. We'll use the information from your home office and the real estate taxes you enter here to calculate the amount you're allowed for each deduction. So if you entered $100 of total home expenses for your home office and you used 20% of your home for your home office, you should enter $100 here as well. We'll automatically split the $100 for you, reporting $20 for the home office deduction and $80 for Itemized Deductions.
If you're renting out a property to someone else, only enter the personal portion of the real estate taxes from the rental here. You'd have a personal portion if there was personal use of the rental during the year. Enter the rental portion of the real estate taxes on the Your Rental Income (Schedule E) screen.
Note: You can no longer deduct foreign taxes you paid on real estate.
