How do I claim the excess Social Security credit?

Our software automatically calculates the excess Social Security tax credit based on the Social Security tax withheld you enter on your W-2 forms.

If you work for more than one employer during the year, each employer is required to withhold Social Security taxes up to the maximum for that year. However, if you have withheld from your pay more than the annual maximum of Social Security tax, you will receive a tax credit on the excess amount.

If a single employer withheld too much Social Security tax, then instead of the tax credit on your tax return, you need to contact your employer and have the employer refund you the excess Social Security Tax withheld.
