See the
Form 1040 instructions for complete rules on who can be claimed as a dependent.
In general, to claim a person who is not a relative as a dependent on your tax return, the following criteria must be met:
- The other person must have lived with you all year as a member of your household as long as your relationship did not violate local law.
- The other person's gross income must be less than $5,200.
- You must have provided over half of the other person's support during 2025.
If your fiance meets the above rules, you can claim them as a dependent on your tax return.
However, if you're married, be sure not to claim your spouse as a dependent. When you file
Married Filing Jointly, you automatically claim your spouse on the tax return, so you don't need to enter your spouse as a dependent on the tax return.
