I have hundreds of stock sale transactions. How do I enter them on Schedule D?

If you have so many stock sales that it would take a very long time to enter them in one by one, then if you have a summary document from your investment broker, you can enter the summary totals instead of each stock sale individually.

For example, if you have an E-Trade consolidated 1099 that shows all the detail for 150 short-term stock sales and the detail for 200 long-term stock sales, then you would choose to enter a summary of sales on the Type of Stock or Investment Sale screen.

You would then enter one stock sale showing the summary amounts for the short-term stock sales and enter another stock sale record showing the summary amounts for the long-term stock sales on the E-Trade consolidated 1099. So, you would enter two entries instead of 350 entries.

What would I send to the IRS?
