What happens if my direct deposit information is wrong?

Starting in 2026, if the IRS can't match the account information (both the account number and the routing number) from your return with an actual, existing account and routing number, it will send you Notice CP53E requesting your direct deposit information. If you fail to respond to the notice with your direct deposit information within 30 days of the date on the notice, the IRS will hold your refund for up to 6 weeks and then mail a check to the address shown on the tax return.

However, if the IRS matches all of the account information in your return with an account that already exists, your refund may be deposited into that bank account, even if it is not your bank account.
