If you didn't use direct deposit or if the direct deposit information you entered on your tax return is incorrect, the IRS will send you Notice CP53E requesting your direct deposit information or a
valid reason why you should receive a paper check. If you fail to respond to the notice within 30 days from the date on the notice, the IRS will hold your refund for 6 weeks, and then mail your refund check to the address listed on page 1 of your tax return. If you respond to the notice, the IRS will issue your refund as requested (either through direct deposit or through a paper check mailed to the address listed on page 1 of your tax return).
