I purchased a new vehicle last year. I paid for tax, title and registration. How or where do I enter the taxes that I paid on my car when I bought it?

Menu Path: Deductions/Credits > Itemized Deductions > Taxes Paid

Fees other than property taxes for the purchase of your automobile are not deductible.

In some states, the property tax portion of the annual registration is deductible on Schedule A as an itemized deduction. It depends on whether the registration fee is just a fee, or whether it is an actual tax based on the value of the vehicle. Fees aren't deductible, but the property tax portion is deductible on Schedule A as itemized deductions.

The sales tax that you paid when you purchased a vehicle may also be deductible on your tax return. If you itemize your deductions, you can deduct either your state and local income taxes, or the amount you paid in sales tax.

If you don't know the actual amount of sales tax you paid during the year, you can use the IRS Sales Tax Deduction Calculator , or you can use the State and Local General Sales Tax Deduction Worksheet in the Schedule A instructions which can be found on the IRS website .

Enter sales tax paid on the Deductible Taxes Paid screen.
