Are my closing costs deductible?

Some types of closing costs for a personal residence are deductible. Did you pay any points or loan origination fees on the loan for your new home? Those are deductible as mortgage interest on Schedule A of your return. Many times there will be a small payment of real estate taxes shown on the closing statement that can be added to real estate taxes paid during the year as itemized deductions. Other types of closing expenses are not deductible.
