How do I abate interest charged by the IRS?

It's much harder to have the IRS abate interest than it is to have the IRS abate penalties. To abate (reduce or remove) interest from the IRS, they generally require that the interest is related to an error or delay caused by the IRS, not the taxpayer.

Examples of an IRS delay or error are:
  • The IRS lost your submitted documents, causing a delay in resolving your case.
  • The IRS delayed processing your tax return or response letters.
  • The additional taxes due were not identified by the IRS in a timely manner.
  • The IRS incorrectly assessed interest to a taxpayer in a declared disaster area, combat zone, or who qualified for a military deferment.
To request interest abatement, file IRS Form 843 which can be found on the IRS website .
