How do I report fellowship grants that aren't on a Form W-2?

Menu Path: Income > Uncommon Income > Other Income

Fellowship grants that are taxable are supposed to be reported on a Form W-2. However, some universities or academic institutions will occasionally report this income on a different tax form.

If you're sure that your fellowship grant or research stipend is taxable, you may want to first ask the payer to correct which form they report the income with and issue you a Form W-2.

If you can't get the payer to correct the form, you should not include the incorrect form (1099-MISC, or whatever non-W-2 form you received) in the software. Instead, report the income under "Taxable Scholarships or Grants" on the Other Sources of Income screen.
