Why do I have to estimate the amount I owe?
When you file an extension, you get an extension of time to file your return, but you don't get an extension of time to pay any taxes you owe. The IRS requires all payments to be made on time. To make sure you pay on time, we need you to estimate the amount you'll owe.
If you're not sure how much you owe, you'll need to make your best estimate. We recommend you enter your tax information using FreeTaxUSA to estimate your tax owed. Put in estimated income amounts on your return, so you can get your estimated tax owed for the extension, and then correct these estimates when you file your actual return.
