Can I file a joint Arkansas return if my spouse and I have different residency statuses?

Our software currently does not support joint Arkansas returns when spouses have different residency statuses (for example, one spouse is an Arkansas resident and the other is a partyear or nonresident).

To file using our software, you have these options:

• Use the same residency status for both spouses, or
• File as Married Filing Separately - Combined Return (Arkansas "Method A"). Under this method, each spouse's income is listed separately (columns A and B), each spouse's tax is figured separately, and the taxes are then added together, resulting in a combined refund or combined tax due.
• File as Married Filing Separately on Different Returns (Arkansas "Method B"). Under this method, each spouse files a separate Arkansas return.

If you and your spouse choose to file as Married Filing Separately on Different Returns due to different residency statuses, you will need to set up two separate FreeTaxUSA accounts and file your state returns separately.
