Why do my medical expenses have to be over a certain amount?

You can only deduct medical expenses if your expenses are above a certain threshold. That threshold is 7.50% of your adjusted gross income (AGI).

If your medical expenses are below that amount, it doesn't benefit you on your federal return to find your medical receipts and enter those expenses because they can't be deducted anywhere on your return. Only the expenses above the threshold are deducted.

We've shown you approximately what 7.50% of your AGI is so far based on what you've entered. As you enter more information in FreeTaxUSA, your AGI (and your medical deduction threshold) can change.

You can always enter your medical expenses just in case, and we'll calculate how much you can deduct. For some state returns, it may also benefit you to enter your medical expenses even if you can't deduct them on your federal return.
