- Go to the Menu Path: Final Steps > Step 3 - Submit Tax Return > Prior Year AGI or PIN screen.
- Continue through these screens until you get to the screen asking you to verify with your AGI.
- Enter your Prior Year AGI.
If you've previously been rejected for an incorrect entry, you might need to enter something different than what's on your prior return. Check if any of these circumstances apply to you and follow the instructions given:
- If you're able to make a correction to your AGI amount, click Save and Continue through the final screens and resubmit your return.
- If you're unable to make a correction and you're rejected for what you believe is a correct entry, you can try to enter zero as your Prior Year AGI, or enter your prior year e-file PIN instead, or you can file by mail this year here: Menu Path: Final Steps > Step 3 - Submit Tax Return > Filing Method
For Extensions Only
If you need to fix prior-year AGI for your extension, you'll follow the same steps listed above, but you'll use the screens starting here: Menu Path:
Account > File an Extension > Final Steps > Prior Year AGI or PIN.
The IRS only requires a Prior Year AGI or PIN to e-file an extension if you're using direct debit to make your extension payment. You can also choose a different payment method for the amount you're paying with your extension to get your extension accepted.
