What is an excess HSA contribution?
There's a limit to how much you or your employer can contribute to your HSA. If you or your employer make contributions that go over the limit, it's considered an excess contribution.
2025 HSA Contribution Limits:
Family: $8,550*
Single: $4,300*
*Those over 55 can contribute an additional $1,000, and this isn't considered an excess contribution.
If you have both a family and single HSA (between 2 spouses), you still can't contribute more than the total family limit.
