Why can't I buy an I Bond with my refund?

You used to be able to purchase up to $5,000 in I Bonds on your tax return using Form 8888. However, the Treasury Department has discontinued the program. You can still purchase I Bonds directly from the Treasury Department. See Treasury FAQs  for more information.
