How do I report an IRA recharacterization?

How you report an IRA recharacterization will depend on when you did the recharacterization.

Recharacterization during 2025: If your contribution was for 2025 and you did the recharacterization during 2025, you'll receive a 1099-R which you need to enter and you'll also enter the IRA contribution info on your 2025 return in these two areas of the software:
Menu Path: Income > Common Income > Retirement Income (1099-R)
Menu Path: Deductions/Credits > Common Deductions/Credits > IRA Contributions

Make sure you report the IRA contribution under the original type of IRA you contributed to and not the new recharacterized type.

Recharacterization during 2026: If your contribution was for 2025 and you did the recharacterization during 2026, you'll enter your IRA contribution and recharacterization on your 2025 return in this area of the software: Menu Path: Deductions/Credits > Common Deductions/Credits > IRA Contributions

Make sure you report the IRA contribution under the original type of IRA you contributed to and not the new recharacterized type.

Then, you'll have a little more to report regarding this recharacterization on your 2026 return since you'll receive a 2026 1099-R.
