Why didn't my amendment change my refund (or tax due) like I expected it to?

When you make a change on your amendment, any of these things can happen:
  • You can be eligible for a refund based on your changes.
  • You can owe additional taxes based on your changes.
  • You can have no overall net change to your refund (or amount owed).
The results of your amendment depend on the types of changes you are making.

Some changes may be dollar-for-dollar changes. For example, adding additional amounts you had withheld can increase your refund by that exact dollar amount.

Many changes, however, are not dollar-for-dollar and can be complex in how they factor into your tax calculation. For example, adding an additional W-2 can increase your income (and the tax on that income), but it can also update the amounts you had withheld, which further adjusts your overall refund/amount owed.

As you enter your changes on your amendment, we'll automatically calculate the final refund/amount owed results of your amendment, so you can be sure it's calculated correctly.
