What if I didn't acquire my investment on one specific date?
If you acquired the stock or investment at different times, answer No to the question that asks if you acquired the investment on a specific date. Then choose Various Dates Acquired - One Year or Less if you owned the investment for less than one year or Various Dates Acquired - More than One Year if you owned the investment for more than a year.
The date after you gained ownership of the investment is usually the day you start counting how many days you've owned the investment. So, if you bought a share of stock on Thursday, then Friday would be the first day that you could count as owning the stock. The day you sold or disposed of the investment counts towards the number of days you've owned the investment.
Example: You sell 50 shares of XYZ mutual fund stock that were purchased as part of a dividend reinvestment program. The 50 shares were purchased through many small purchases over several years. The purchases were made over a year ago. You would answer No to the question that asks if you acquired the investment on a specific date and choose Various Dates Acquired - More than One Year.
