What is tax paid?

Tax paid is the amount of tax you paid when you filed your 2025 Pennsylvania return. It is NOT the overall tax or withholding and should not include any penalties or interest paid.

The amount of tax paid on your 2025 Pennsylvania return is on Form PA-40, Line 28.

Example: You filed an original Pennsylvania return and had $30,000 of income. This resulted in an overall tax liability of $921. Throughout the year, you had $800 in taxes withheld from your paychecks. When you filed your original Pennsylvania return, you paid the $121 in taxes you still owed ($921 of total tax liability - $800 in tax withholdings). This $121 is the tax paid on your original Pennsylvania Form PA-40, Line 28, and that's the amount you would enter.
