Step 1

Set Up a Free Account

It only takes a few seconds to set up a FreeTaxUSA account. If you've filed with us before, just sign in to your account.

Step 2

Gather Your Tax Documents

Prepare to file by gathering all of your tax documents, including any documentation associated with the changes you need to make to your original return.

Step 3

Recreate Your Original Tax Return

Start a tax return in your account. Enter the information exactly as it appears on your original tax return, even if it was incorrect. The software needs that original information to reflect the changes you make later in the amended return.

Step 4

Opt to "Mail" the Recreated Return

Once you have recreated your original tax return, go to the Filing menu and indicate that you want to mail your return. You will not actually mail it, this step just puts the return into a finalized state.

Step 5

Fill Out an Amended Tax Return

Once your return has a "mailed" status, you can start your amended return. To begin, click the Amend Tax Return link on the side menu. Our software will walk you through the rest of the process step by step.

Step 6

E-File or Mail Your Tax Return

You can usually e-file your amended return if you e-filed your original return during the same calendar year.

You can't e-file and must mail your amended return if:

• You filed your original return on paper
• You've already e-filed three amended returns this year
• You have required documents you need to mail in with your amended return
• You've mailed in a prior year tax return during the current filing season
• The IRS doesn't have a record of your original return
