State tax filing

Can I just file a state return?

You can choose to mail a state return using our software. You can only e-file a state return if you also e-file your federal return using our software.

If you filed your federal return with us, it's easy. You just need to sign in to your account again and go through the state screens to make sure the state return is complete, then go to the Filing Method screen at the end of the application, and click Save and Continue. If your federal return was e-filed using our software and has been accepted by the IRS, our software will automatically e-file only the state tax return without e-filing the federal return.

If you filed your federal return somewhere else, you can still file a state tax return using FreeTaxUSA. You'll need to fill in all of your federal tax information as shown on the federal tax return you already mailed or e-filed since the federal information is the starting point for state returns. Make sure the federal tax return on your account matches the federal tax return you mailed or e-filed already. On the Filing Method screen, choose to mail your federal return. Your state return will need to be mailed. The software will prompt you to mail your federal return, but you can ignore that if you have already filed your federal tax return.

I already filed my federal tax return elsewhere. Can I e-file only my state return?

No, but you can still mail your state return. You will still need to fill in all of your federal tax information as shown on the federal tax return you already mailed in or e-filed since the federal information is the starting point for state returns. Make sure the federal tax return on your account matches the federal tax return you mailed or e-filed already.

When you get near the end of the program to the Filing Method screen, choose to mail your federal return. After you click the Send Tax Return button, you will go to a screen that tells you about mailing your federal tax return, but you can ignore those instructions since you already filed your federal return.

How do I correct my state tax return before completing the filing process?

If you haven't already e-filed your state tax return and had it accepted by the state Department of Revenue, you can sign in to your account and use the menu to go to the State screens section. You can make any changes or corrections needed before you e-file your state tax return. The state return (and federal, if you haven't already filed the federal) will not be e-filed until you go to the Submit Return for Processing screen which is after the Self-Select PIN screen, and click on the Send Tax Return button at the bottom of that page.

Do I need to resubmit my state tax return if my e-filed federal tax return is rejected?

Except for California and Massachusetts any state that is e-filed along with the federal tax return will automatically be rejected if the federal tax return is rejected. Make any corrections needed, then resubmit your federal and state tax return for e-filing by going to the Submit Return for Processing screen and clicking on the Send Tax Return button.

California and Massachusetts have their own electronic transmission system, so if your federal tax return is rejected, you do NOT need to resubmit your California or Massachusetts return for electronic processing.

Can I choose to not e-file my state tax return?

Yes. Just don't order a state tax return on the Payment screen. If you have ordered a state tax return and want to mail the state tax return instead of e-filing it, then on the Filing Method screen at the end, choose to "Mail" your state tax return.

Can I file just a state tax return?

On the Filing Method screen, choose Mail your federal tax return to the question that asks how you would like to file your federal return. Your state return will need to be mailed.
